[Hallicrafters] S-20 Question

Hello to the group,
I was wondering if I could pick the collective knowledge of you all, and
ask if any of you all know the history on the S-20? What prompted the short
production run (aprox. one year)? I don't see any major, earth shattering
improvements in the S-20R, but then again, I am relatively new to this game.
Was it simple economics? Needed the style change so they decided that,
while they were at it, they would just adjust the design to move to single
ended tubes? Performance differences?

The S-20 intrigues me for some reason. I have wanted one for quite a
while, and finally procured one last week. Should be arriving Tuesday or
Wednesday. Extremely excited about it, and can't wait to restore it and get
her going again. In addition to being a avid radio nut infected with
glowbuger-vintiage-radio-boatanchor-itus, I am a huge history nut.
Specifically communications history... so, naturally my quest for knowledge
has me looking for every bit of information on this interesting (to me at
least) receiver.

I hope some one out there can help quench my thirst for knowledge on her,
and I hope that I don't annoy you all too much with all of my questions.
I'm afraid that there will be many more to come, as I am but a young-un
that was born past the tube glory days (I'm the same age as some of my
Kenwood hybrid equipment). Yes, some of us young wipper-snappers love tube
rigs as much as those who grew up with them.

Thanks in advance and 73s,
Jeramy / W5XTL
