You can repair the original switch by carefully removing the offending contact and replacing it with a similar one from another switch. Use one of the very small machine screws and nuts like are used in eyeglasses to hold the "new" contact in place.
If you talk really sweet to one of the technicians at one of the mall type optical outlets they will usually give you a couple for free.

WTB: Operate switch for a Johnson Pacemaker. One of the contacts that connects the primary of the power transformer to line voltage has vaporized. I could use a toggle switch but that would involve drilling a hole on the front panel and I'm not going there.
