Well, technically it was *Frederick Anthony Picariello, aka *Freddy 
Karmon before he was given the stage name Freddy Cannon by his manager.  
I've heard him interviewed where he described how his first hit, a song 
called "Rock and Roll Baby", came about after his mom told him she 
wanted him to put a poem she'd written to music.  He says the idea 
wasn't all that exciting but he knew better than to disobey his mom, and 
the rest is history!
