Lloyd,
The first version of the 8R40 did indeed use a selenium rectifier with the paper cap in a clamp on top the chassis. I had one that I sold a few years ago and have seen others on eBay. The Sams Photofact for the 8R40 also shows the version that you have. For some reason Hallicrafters later changed the power supply to the tube version. I'll take a look and see if I still have the schematic. Will email you a copy if I can find it.
