It was anti-fungal treatment; It's like a glaze or coating that covers ALL 
the parts "underneath", and quite often - the ones on top.  If you've seen 
surplus mil stuff, that looks sort of greenish, that's it.

To provide an example of HOW GOOD it really is (was), when I was on Guam 
Island in the late 60's, we found a US ARMY "mule" (small tracked towing 
vehicle, powered by about a 16 or 20 hp Briggs & Stratton engine) out in the 
jungle, and what was left of a radio, with it.  In spite of being in the 
jungle since 1944, neither the sheet metal*of the "mule", nor the carcass of 
the radio were rusted or deteriorated in any way, except by the 7.7mm 
(Japanese) rounds which had stopped the pair.  (I suspect the vehicle is 
still there)

nearly rusted away
