The FM IF circuits(coils) operate at 10.7 MHz and are separate from the AM
IF which is 455khz.So probably have a problem with the 455KHz IF which could be
a bad alignment ,leaky silver micas inside the IF transformers (that can
kill the "Q' of the IF transformers) or anything !!!.usually it's the other way
round AM is ok but the FM is weak.Anyway be prepared for a lot of frustrating
evenings/afternoons or whatever as this radio has a reputation for all sort
of weird problems.
Your first order of business would be to replace ALL of the paper caps and
the out of tolerance resistors, and this radio has no shortage of them !! Some
of the capacitors and resistors are buried so deep and out of reach places
that will put your patience and abilities to the ultimate test!
Anyway good luck,if the radio is in decent cosmetic condition with all the
parts and knobs ,and the price is right I'd go for it.Just finished recently
working on one .
Regards
AMK"Nick"

I have a chance to pick up an SX-42 at a pretty good price. The owner tells
me that it plays well in FM mode but has low gain in AM mode (no further
details). That's a problem I have not encountered before. Before I plunk down any
cash for this set, I'm looking for some ideas as to what might cause that
problem. As always, thanks for your help.
