[Hallicrafters] SX-42 Low Gain

I have a chance to pick up an SX-42 at a pretty good price. The owner tells me that it plays well in FM mode but has low gain in AM mode (no further details). That's a problem I have not encountered before. Before I plunk down any cash for this set, I'm looking for some ideas as to what might cause that problem. As always, thanks for your help.
