If it will fit the hole in the chassis -- and I'll have to pull out my SX-96 to measure the original transformer -- the Stancor P-8356 would be a fine replacement transformer.
The original is rated at 290 volts each side of center tap at (probably) something like 100 mils, and 6.3 volts at about 4 amps, plus the 5 volt 2 amp rectifier winding. It runs hot. Uncomfortably so, in my opinion.
The Stancor P-8356 is 270 volts each side of center tap (negligible difference) but the current rating is 200 (!!) mils; plus the 6 volt filament winding is 8 (!!) amps.
This one would run real cool.
The Stancor has bells on both sides, for above-chassis mounting; but all you need to do is take one of the bells off and it should lie down nicely. I'm pretty sure it'll fit the hole but will measure first chance I get.
The Stancor P-8155 is 235 volts each side of center tap at 90 mil; the voltage is low but it should still work fine especially if you change the rectifier to solid state instead of the 5Y3. The 6 volt filament winding is 4 amps. It's a tad smaller physically than the P-8356.
There are probably other Stancor units that will serve, as well as Thirdarson or Triad or Merit transformers. All these catalogs are on line somewhere or other; some are on BAMA.
