I've been lurking here with my delete button working overtime on the
"dead horse" SX-88 thread. I'll keep my mouth shut and won't voice an
opinion about that.
I have around 150 receivers of the tube era in my collection,
including mainly military, and professional "land" and marine
qualified receivers, with some ham band only specimens as well.
I have many of the usual suspects by US manufacturers, as well as from
Germany, (East and West), UK, Canada, Australia, the former
Czechoslovakia, and the USSR.
However, I have to say that the best tube receiver I have and ever
used is the Rohde & Schwartz EK07 and, with similar performance
another, much scarcer receiver, somewhat similar to the EK07 - the
Telefunken E104KW. Of course I have R-390A's as well which are great
receivers, but the Ek07 beats them.
The disadvantage is that they're really big and heavy, not as modular
and readily serviceable as the R-390 family and servicing it is much
more difficult.
But the performance is absolutely spectacular.
