The 1954 QST detailed engineering description is  NOT just somebody's opinion 
Roy. Of course if the typical owner does not want to  do the hard grunt work 
just pull the 6CB6 1st RF amplifier out and write it up  on your over-rated 
list since it won't be working anyway.

It would appear that John's opinion of the "overrated" radios is  based  
on lots of care in getting the radios up and running well, and  then a  
lot of using time - not just someone else's opinion passed  along.
