The main problem I see with this thread is that 2 completely different 
points
of view are discussing the same thing, collectors and users.
Users will never understand why a collector would spend the huge
amounts that collectors items command.
Is the SX-88 worth the kilo bucks some folks will pay, who's to say.
Not too long ago I saw a Spiderman comic book sell for $38,000.00.
To someone that just wants to read a Spiderman comic book it wouldn't
be worth that,  it cost .12 cents when it was new.
I remember buying one myself (sure I still had it...).

Collectors and users are looking at things from to completely
different points of view, just acknowledge that and agree to disagree.
