[Hallicrafters] Fwd: SX-88 Value

My posts and pictures followed the unwarranted and unsubstantiated
criticism. These kinds of comments are typical from folks who have never rebuilt and
carefully aligned an SX-88 and thus probably never had the chance to
experience a properly performing speciman.

FROM THE AMFORUM:

W3JN who initiated the thread said in post #7 (excerpt):
"My experiences are borne by generally having owned/restored multiple
copies
(in some cases 8-10 of the same radio). It's interesting, yet predictible,
that my inclusion of the 75A-4 on the "worst" list has created a fair
amount
of breast beating. It's certainly not a bad receiver by any means; it has
its plusses and minuses just like anything else, but is certainly by far
the
WORST value (with the exception of an SX-88) in a ham band receiver out
there
if you're paying "retail".

Then in post #8 W9LBB responded with this:
"Funny you should mention the SX-88. I wound up swapping my GPR-90 to a
local here who ALSO has an SX-88 on the operating bench! I've tuned it a
few
times, but I don't see anything mystical about it; the beast is a competent
tube
receiver, and that's about it. That rig has to be the KING of overrated
receivers!"

Which was followed by this one from the OP W3JN in post #11:
"Per the SX-88, I have one, and it's nice but nothing special IMHO. The
75A-4 is a better reciever, and a better value if you're paying $5K+ for a
SX-88. Course I didn't pay anywhere NEAR that for mine. I like the SX-88
and
prolly wouldn't get rid of it, mainly because it came from a friend.
