Another gimmick cap method I learned about 35 years ago was to use one 
of those little dual side-by-side stirring straws often used for 
coffee.  You slide wire that is about the same size as the ID of the 
straws and then cut the dual-straw down for the correct capacitance.  1 
inch is about 1pf.  The dual-straws will allow making it either a radial 
type cap (both wire extended out the same end) or axial (one wire 
extends out the top and the other the bottom).

Basically it's a spin-off of the old twisted wires, but looks more like 
a real component.
