That is a tough call. They have such different characteristics and I
haven't fixed some of them
up yet enough to turn them on. I'll go with the sp-600.
The sp-600 has the smoothest tuning I've come across.
The 51J's have great linear tuning and accuracy but changing bands every
1MHz can be pain.
The 51j-4 has greatly selectivity due to the mechanical filters.
I love the mechanical complexity of the r-390 and r-390a. The gear boxes are
incredible but
I need to lift some more weights if I am going to band cruise. They
represent an incredible piece
of engineering
The SX-28 is just plain cool. I haven't turned one on yet but I gather that
the audio
is great with the push pull amp.
Likewise for the SX-42.
You have to love that front dial on the HRO's
I've been mainly working on cleaning up sp-600's and I think they will clean
up the best.
You can easily clean the chassis, tube shields and with the engraved letters
the front panel
comes up really nice. Much tougher with the silk screened panels. For the
non-purists you
can buff up the chassis and shield boxes. One guy commented of one of my
sp-600's that
he had never seen a chrome plated radio before. I had to tell him that he
still hadn't.
