I'm with you, Mike...

There is a lot of freedom that comes with gear being approachable and simple enough to fix yourself. In these uncertain economic times with so many getting their pink slips, there is a certain peace of mind that comes from not worrying about your Pacific Rim 8000 PRO IV MARK 3 going "tango uniform". I even detect a certain amount of snobbish superciliousness when I tell guys using their $ KILOBUCK rigs that I am running a humble little novice rig from the 60s. Beyond the fact that we've just exchanged IDENTICAL signal reports, I wonder if there is something I am missing ? And Murphy prevails, you KNOW the high spectrum display will go black the day after he gets layed off.

Sadly, under the specter of dumbing-down ham radio, even if the "New Rig Guys" suddenly used older stuff they probably are untrained and uneducated in even the most basic troubleshooting skills that once were part of every ham radio operator.

Thanks, too, for sharing the virus information...

ah yes...what wonderful technology upon which they have made us all dependent.

Agreed: Tube gear doesn't suffer from these satanic possessions. That, and the fact that I can actually diagnose and fix it -- unlike SMT, which like the computer, the cell phone, and the SUV, is yet another of the Devil's Devices -- is why I appreciate "light-emitting, glass-enclosed fieli-effect transistor" technology and will do everything in my power to not only perpetuate, but propagate it.
