Hi to all. Although I have never owned or operated a 115, I do own both
a 101A and a 117. I DO remember my late Uncle and Elmer's shack. W1BNO,
a WONDERFUL man!!
He had a HT-32 and a SX-115. On a later visit, the 115 was gone and in
it's place was an RME 6900. I have had several of the RMEs through the
years and currently own a nice example. That slide rule dial is
awesome! I also owned one of W6AM's RME 6900 / 6901 combos.
If I HAD to choose between the 101A and the 117, the 117 would be my
choice by far. I redid my 117 using the 4 part article in Electric
Radio Mag. Ray Osterwald, N0DMS, really knows his way around this radio.
His articles explains the receiver's 'shortcomings', it being a cost
reduced 115. His mods fix ALMOST all of the drawbacks, but I can say my
117 is a HOT performer!
The chassis, being aluminum, cleaned up just beautifully, just like my
75A-4 did.
Using advise provided by the Collins Collector Assn. concerning the
"deadly caps", in the A-4, all the Black Beauties were VERY leaky as
was one on the silver micas. The difference in performance was
dramatic. The 101A also 'came alive' and works fantastic.

Subject: [Hallicrafters] SX101, 115, 117
I fumbled an earlier comment using wrong reply
So here goes again
(1) I accidentally stopped the drift in my 101 when I had an old worn
out towell over it as a dust cover while cutting stuff in the shop.
Night after night I could hit the same net without touching the tuning.
Simply amazing Yes, of course I checked to see if it was getting hot
but the towell didn't make a severe difference, just a little warmer.
(2) What is the group opinion on SX 115 vs SX 117? I have a 117 and it
is everything maybe more than I expected. If the 115 I always thought I
wanted weren't any or a whole bunch better I would be a tad
disappointed and certainly wouldn't pop for the coin to get one. Other
than the looks factor, which I suppose is why I end up with a lot of my
choices.
Cheers
