[Hallicrafters] SX-42 Bandspread

Hi Ed,

How are things going?

Life is a bit bumpy over here.

The SB-102 had a problem with the PTT not working. The
mic itself had a broken wire, but I still can't get
even after "fixing" that. The D-104 isn't working
either. Haven't really had time to thoroughly look
into it though.

I was returning from work after dark and 20M was
pretty dead by the time I'd manage to get on the air.
The furthest west QSO I ever managed was Dayton, OH
(with SSB). Most code is still too fast for me to get
it all. I can start to make out partial words/phrases
though. Still might be able to get further, but I'll
have to use the Tel-Aviv Club station until I get
sorted out again over here.

I got laid-off from work last Thursday. Economic
downturn. Might be sweeping streets soon.

I finally broke down and decided to get something
brand-new completely modern, move into the 21st
century. I really like this old gear, but now with the
girls around I just don't have the time like I used
to.
So a few months back, after looking and reading
reviews I ordered the kit version of the Elecraft K3.
Almost went for their K2, but figured I won't be doing
this again very soon. I didn't go all out, just kept
to the basics. They say you can add more later. My
sister will bring it over when she comes to visit in
March.

Ed is correct about this and it is a "gotcha" for a
lot of people. The cap is designed so you have
different bandspread calibrations on different parts
of the dial.

If the calibration is way off only on the upper bands
make sure you are not tracking the HFO on the wrong
side.

The SX-42 is different than any other receiver I have
seen. Most receivers have the bandspread capacitor at
minimum capacity at one end of rotation. The SX-42 has
minimum capacity with the capacitor about half way. If
you look at the capacitor you will see that going
either way will increase the capacity. Leave it in the
center at minimum capacity while you align the
oscillator. mixer and RF stages. Good luck.

I am not sure my band spread cap (fine tuning) is
setup correctly. I have it set now to zero with the
plate caps completely un-meshed. I am working my
way through the alignment but the frequencies seem way
off. The main tuning cap seems correct as it is
completely meshed just as the dial hits the low end
of the scale.

I remember someone mentioning that they thought the
band spread should be half meshed at zero..... The
"Dial Service" bulletin does not address this.

Thanks

Rich
