Back in the 60's they were real popular for a couple hundred watts 
out...maybe 500 PEP for some really pushing them, but most I saw had the 
connection in the base with only a few in the tube. Of course it 
probably depends on what batch they came out of or who made them. This 
was all in one area so it's indeed possible the ones I saw all came out 
of one or two batches.

IIRC the single tube transmitters tended to chirp a lot without a buffer 
stage.
