Using the above, the USPS rates have increased faster than inflation (i.e. 42
cents) and gas has increased faster than inflation (1965 price, per my
recollection was around 30 cents/gallon). On the other hand, I doubt that you could
get the SX-117 hand assembled in the US today, with all US components, at
$2,584.70.
My Marantz 18 FM receiver, circa 1968, was the last Marantz assembled in the
US. In 1968 it retailed at $719. In today's dollars, that's over $4,000.
Compare that to the price of high end audio equipment being manufactured in the
US and that's about in the ball park.
We have the advantage today of off shore assembly and high speed automated
component manufacturing.
