As I have oft maintained...
These radios are, essentially, industrial machines.
Not "objets d'arte."
The paint was probably mixed in a 55 gallon drum using
a boat paddle to stir, in a back corner of the Halli
plant, lit only by fluorescent fixtures, on a dark and
dreary day using the Calibrated Mark I Eyeball to
check the mix.
It had to vary.
In fact I have seen so many shades of "Holy
Hallicrafters Black," if I had a dollar for every one,
I could retire. And I seriously doubt the existence
of the "Holy Grail of Halli Gray." Their name is
Legion; for they are many.
Why not just go to the hardware or automotive store,
cruise the aerosol paint rack and pick out one that
"looks close"? You can do very well with that method.
Above all: Have fun with it!
