Jim,
I do not know for certain about the short and long term potential issues
using spray on lacquer, but I do know that the spray on clear coat plastic
used by Artists does not damage pencil drawings, chalk art, oil or water
base paintings etc. The clear plastic protective spray is available in a
spray can from any art supply store.
I even used it to get rid of the nasty smell of mildew inside a wood
cabinet! The interior was not finished where the odor was coming from, and
the exterior trim hid other parts. I took it outside on an open air porch
and had a sighted friend coat the interior with the plastic sealant spray.
It totally eliminated the smell of mildew and had no after the fact smell
after several days outside.
Nothing seems to kill the smell of mildew, but this spray at least covers it
up and it smells no more! That was four years ago, still no bleedthrough
odor.
