[Hallicrafters] SX-17 S Meter interchangeability

Carl,

The images are original right out of a 17. The other (assembled) meter is the same meter prior to disassembly. The scale is actually a stiff phenolic material about 1/16" thick, hence my reference to PC board material. The phenolic material is coated with a thin layer of opaque material on one side not allowing any light to pass through. The wording and numbers are engraved on the face of the scale removing this opaque material only in those letter/number areas. Shine a # 47 behind it and you have your rear illuminated scale. So, using a thin PC board material or any material about 1/16" thick, covered with an opaque material on one side would work. Incidentally, the opaque covering is a dull silver color.

Your scale which you describe as paper thin may not be original. I have had (3) of these meters directly from 17's, and they all were made of a stiff phenolic material and about 1/16" thick.

While recapping my 17, I have run into at least 3 variations in circuit diagrams and component values. I don't think it was well documented so, I just replaced what I found.
