If I had such a rebuild to do here's how I would go about it:
Get some lengths of Plexiglas strips, or cut some off a small bit of
sheet. Down the center line drill a row of holes the same size as the
wire of the coil and in your case, spaced 1/16 inch apart. Then with a
very thin saw (the Xacto Knife saw might be just right) slit the thing
into two parts right down the center of the row of holes. Even if not
much of each hole is left, clamping the sawed-apart bars over the
turns of wire will make a very nice looking job of it. Plexiglas glue
will cement the whole thing together as nice as you please. Note:
Coil dope will NOT "melt" the plexiglass. The solvent for styrene in
coil dope is different from the plexiglas glue or solvent.
