Hi Mark,

The reason it's recommended is because the HT-37 (and some other 
Hallicrafters transformers) are prone to failure by means of a short 
from the HV winding to the filament winding or to the core (ground).    
By completely removing the 5 volt filament wires you eliminate one 
common path for a short to develop, and hopefully prolong the life of 
your transformer.   Just clip 'em and put heat shrink on the ends, takes 
but a minute.

Do be sure your low voltage B+ ends up running in the specified range to 
be sure there is a dropping resistor inside your replacements.   Don't 
worry about the high B+ as your 6146 finals can easily tolerate the 
increased voltage.
