Ted,

Since the equipment you mentioned is vintage Coast Guard equipment, it
won't have any military designation. The Coast Guard used to have
their own contracts and didn't use the standard military (Navy)
nomenclature. They didn't use standard Navy equipment, either. Most
likely the equipment was either a Coast Guard special contract or
civilian (Merchant Marine type) gear, although Hallicrafters was not a
"big" name in maritime equipment, except for a few low power
transmitter/receivers made for small vessels, and during WW2 some of
these were adopted by the Signal Corps (a typical example is the
BC-669).

So TB-142 must have been the Coast Guard nomenclature for the VLF
transmitters you mentioned.

If they cover the 500 KHz band, maybe it's worth to wait before
modifying them, because hams may get the 500 KHz band in a few years.
There is some experimental licensed ham activity on that band in the
US and some other countries.

The RAO series Navy receivers were not used for communications per se,
in conjunction with a transmitter, but they were intended as
monitoring and communications intercept receivers.
