The S-53A was "reboxed" as the S-107. Same receiver except in the "new" style cabinet. My Novice Class receiver was the S-107 (traded in a Heath AR-3 to Allied Radio in Chicago for the receiver). It worked OK on 15 meters but was a little deaf on 10 meters and 6 meters.
I acquired two S-107 receivers a while back to "re-create" my original Novice Class station from 1959.

There are two flavors, the S-53 with a 2075 Kc IF and the S-53A with 455 Kc. Its a noticable step up from the 38 and the 6SB7Y mixer is a fairly quiet tube.
It performs well on the low bands and an outboard acive preselector does wonders for the higher bands.
There is also plenty of room inside to add improvements.
I use an A model in the garage shop to monitor daytime AM nets on 40-20M with a 60' long wire about 25' high and an old Ameco preselector. Thinking about putting the DX-60/HG-10B out there to keep it company but that will certainly cut down my working efficiency!____________________
