Dan,
Esterline-Angus (now Esterline Technologies Inc, is still in business,
(NYSE ESL). While primarily now an aerospace company, they made chart
recorders for years. Companies like Hallicrafters would have used these
recorders for any number of test and measurement tasks, such as
monitoring circuit performance, temperature, frequency variation, etc
over time. The chart recorder will have a motor that can be adjusted
to various (slow) speeds to esablish the timebase for the recording,
along with signal conditioning and amplification to drive the pen that
traces the recording on the moving paper. Pretty much what we'd use a
PC with a data acquisition system or datalogger for today.
