The earlier handbooks are very spare on tube base information.   A few 
pictorial drawings only and no numbers at all, at least in my 31 and 32 handbooks.   
Tubes in those days were predominately 4-pin types which seem to have been 
consistently wired with pins 1 and 4 (as now numbered) being the filament, pin 2 
the grid and pin 3 the plate.   Likewise, the 5 pin triodes seemed to have 
been consistently 1 & 5-heater, 2-cathode, 3-grid and 4-plate.   The pages of 
base diagrams with which we are all familiar came along later.
