[Hallicrafters] S-40A dial cord question

When I received my 'new' S-40A both dial cords were broken and pieces loose
on the chassis.
Looking at the restringing guide (Sam's restringing guide, 1947) and every
other S-40 manual, it shows the bandspread cord going from the flywheel over
the pulley and around the drum on the bandspread capacitor.
The problem is that the pulley and drum are not in alignment ~ with the
pulley about 1/2" closer to the back of the chassis than the capacitor
drum. The drum is fixed on the capacitor shaft and can not be moved and the
pulley does have a set screw but because of the collar can not be moved
toward the front of the chassis. (Hope this makes sense).
The above arrangement will not allow the pulley and drum to be aligned in a
straight line. . . .
If anyone can help with this I would really appreciate it and better yet, if
someone could take a picture of a 'working' unit.
TIA
