The S-53 is an interesting little receiver. This may be the first use of
2075 KC for the IF frequency. The S-53A superseded it of course and reverted
back to the smaller size transformers with a more conventional 455 KC IF
frequency. I have often wondered if the S-53 was a pilot model to prove out the
feasibility of 2075 in the consumer market for use in the later dual conversion
receivers.

I recently added to my collection the humblest Hallicrafters I have
ever seen, the S-53. I think it is an early version as the date
stamped inside is August 15, 1947. A Hallicrafters picture gallery
called the production from 1948. All the pictures I have seen show
the big plastic knobs with a metal ring insert ( over an inch and a
half in diameter on mine), and the smaller knobs, which on my
version are a bit over ll/16 inch in diameter. And they are made of
machined aluminum. I think the pictures I have seen of the S-53A
and the S-53AU show a larger and perhaps less metallic small knob.
Can anyone confirm this?

It appears that someone changed out the band switch, which is where I
am missing one of the little aluminum knobs. Any chance someone has
a source for these old knobs or a parted radio?

Thanks,

JP
