Sounds like the final amplifier is "taking off".
Could be the sweep tubes are going bad. Check the
neutralization. Also tighten up every machine screw
and nut in the transmitter. This "fixes" the vast
majority of "screwy" problems that I run into in boat
anchor equipment.

The 44 was tuning up correctly, output was adjustable
with the RF level control controlling and I think the
frequency stability under control. Then I switched
antennas from the dummy load to my dipole and now the
RF control has no effect - I get max power (over 100
w) regardless of the RF control setting (even back on
the dummy load). The RF pot and the Operation switch
both seem to be ok. Any suggestions where to look?
