Thanks for the suggestions regarding solid-stating the HT-37 power supply.
For the archives, I ended up replacing the high voltage 5R4 with a pair
of 1N4007s in each leg, and the low voltage 5U4 with a single 1N4007 and
a 200 ohm 25 watt resistor in series with the DC output. This brought
the LV within spec, and the increased HV did in fact result in a few
more watts output, but is still well within the 6146 ratings. I
personally don't think there is a need to limit inrush current, as
thousands of radios including every Heathkit has worked fine without it,
however the Weber Copper Caps look like a nice way to go for plug-in
replacement, and I wasn't aware of them before. I went with a Dale
RH-25 resistor from the junkbox which is now heat-sink mounted to the
rear chassis, and clipped the 5 volt filament wires to eliminate the
breakdown risk and unburden the transformer. The modern TO-220 style
power resistors should be suitable as well, 25 watts is a little
marginal - new 50 watters go for around $4 each from Mouser.
My AC line typically runs around 118, but it's a good idea to keep an
eye on it.
