[Hallicrafters] HP frequency counter

I know this may be a bit off topic, but I have a HP 5315B frequency counter
(bought 2nd hand) that gives me an error 3 (E3 = ref oscillator or MRC (?)
problem) on power up. The available manual from HP (online) has all the
detailed service material and schematics removed and the parts placement
pictures in the manual are unreadable. On contacting HP Service & Parts
they don't even have a copy of the manual in their library and don't even
seem to know about the (useless) online one.

There are two large (cpu ?) chips on the board with an empty chip socket
between them and I'm wondering if there is something missing as this is near
the osc. test point. The pictures are so faded in the online manual can't
actually see the board/parts layouts.

Basically the manual has been obscured such as to only be operator manual..
how sad is that.

Does anyone have a copy of the full manual or even the schematics or
service/repair/layout pages. Or a better idea on how to deal with this
error.

Many thanks to all.
