[Hallicrafters] Recapping a SX-28A

Bob:

Here's an article from Phil Nelson that is very, very good:

http://www.antiqueradio.org/halli12.htm

(For those who are not familiar with Phil and his website, it's definitely worth checking out).

I just finished an SX-28 and have the following suggestions:

    1. Go to the Bama site and download the military manual for the SX-28A. If I remember correctly, it's much better than the Hallicrafters manual or the Rider's material.

     2. Test every resistor. I found many that were more than 10% out of spec. Cumulatively, the replacement of these resistors made a big difference.

    3. The 11 caps in the RF deck are the most difficult to get to. However, their replacement makes a big difference in performance. If you have a lot of patience and some good tools, you can probably replace eight of these caps without removing the RF deck. However, there is no way to get to the three in the 1st RF without removing the RF deck. The article above gives good directions. The job is not as bad as it sounds. (Hey, if I can do it, anyone can!).

    4. Make especially sure you check all the resistors in the RF deck. Leaky caps have caused a lot of these resistors to drift high.

Subject: [Hallicrafters] Recapping a SX-28A

I just bought a working SX-28A, are there any good recapping directions for this receiver such as the directions in the Hammarlund Historian for the SP-600 which I found invaluable? Also the cab needs paint, is there paint available for this?
