I find the new "curly-que" style CFLs to be quiet once you get a foot or
two away from it, relative to some fluorescents and anything controlled
by a phase angle dimmer that can radiate all over your house. Roy's
got some suggestions if you can't live without the dimmer, otherwise I
tend to revert back to the old "binary dimmer". Another thing to be
aware of is all the electronic gizmos like DVD players, TVs, monitors,
and have switching power supplies, even in their "off" mode.

For LF listening I often find myself in the dark in my quest to
eliminate all sources of electrical noise. Of course a small
incandescent lamp does the job, but I recently picked up a nifty LED
lamp that has 35 white LED on a gooseneck mount for only $10 at the
local builder supply store. This is a lot cheaper than most LEDs so the
price must be coming down, and I like it on the workbench too. I'm
always wishing for a little more light in those dark corners of a
chassis and with the LED lamp, and when I whack my head on it it just
hurts, rather than burning, too ;-)
