The SX-96 is the precursor to the SX-100.

They are the same basic radio. The 100 adds the crystal calibrator and antenna trimmer; but also adds the notch filter. The filter is in a separate box above the middle of the back of the chassis.

The 100 also has an extra stage of 50 KHz IF to make up for the loss in gain through the filter.

The SX-96 is also the successor to the S-76, the radio with the Simpson 260-sized S meter. The 96 has a number of improvements over the 76 such as a stronger BFO and improved AVC and detector so that the AVC and S meter operate in CW-SSB mode.

There is a rare late-production variant of the SX-96, called the SX-86A, which has the antenna trimmer and maybe even the crystal calibrator -- which would be a HUGE addition to the usefulness of the 96, if included. I've never seen a 96A but there are photos of one on the w9wze.net site.

The 96 is a very decent receiver, by the way; but without a calibrator, knowing where you are is a SWAG-method determination.

The S-76 was built from 1951-54 (maybe very early 55. The 96 was only built in 55-56; but the SX-100 is dirt common since its production lasted from late 56-early 57 through 62 or maybe early 63.

I rather suspect -- though I've not made a study of this -- that the SX-122 is pretty much a reboxed SX-100.
