While I fear that we are drifting a tad from HALLICRAFTERS subject matter, I
could not resist. I was a US Navy Radioman type, and went through SATCOM
school(s) at Ft. Monmouth, NJ, in 1967. For those who don't know - Ft.Mon
is, or was, the home of the US Army Signal Corps. The schools had a
plethora of civilian and Army instructors, most of which were pretty good,
but they all seemed to have their personal foibles & quirks of character.
The program was called IDCSP (Initial Defense Communication Satellite
Program), and used AN/TSC-54, AN/SSC-3, and AN/MSC-46 terminals. I can tell
you that it was an incredible thrill to have come from an S-38D and a
homebrew 6L6, to hearing yourself talk back from a 45,000 mile +/- trip.
(out and back). The first time I heard my voice say "Test One-Two-Three -
Out" back to me, I was happy that I'd traveled a long road from a Johnson
Ranger and an SX-99, in high school.
Live Long & Prosper, indeed.
