They may appear to know a lot about computers but usually have knowledge 
in a very narrow area. 
While in college I worked with a computing challenge/contest every 
year.  Not once did the local "computer geniuses" do well.  The contests 
assumed you already knew how to program. The challenge was solving a 
problem with the computer, BUT you had to know how to solve the problem 
and then program it.  The winners were invariably some kids (they worked 
in teams of 3 or 4) who were only average with computers, but good at 
problem solving.

Sounds like they were interviewing in the wrong field.
