Sounds like it might be tobacco scum.

Several years ago I acquired an S-22R that had been
owned by a very heavy smoker, and the grille was full
of the stuff. Oorganic flux remover (as in solder
flux) was used to clean it, which did a great job; but
what came out of that wire grille onto the paper
towels I'd put underneath it was sickening. I can
just imagine what that guy's lungs must have looked
like. Gaggamaggot!

The slime was so thick, that it had collected heavily
behind the "h" and the shape of the letter was slimed
right there in the mesh.

The cabinet, when washed with shampoo and a
toothbrush, shed yellow slime for three treatments
before coming clean. The chassis also had to be
scrubbed with organic flux remover to get the stuff
off. A side benefit of all this was that it also got
the stink out.

Yes, I got the radio cheap (relatively), and when
finished it was (is) a super performer. It came from
an estate. I've wondered often if the owner died of
lung cancer.

Oh yes, as for which other speakers might fit: Maybe
the S-20 and/or S-20R speakers would work.
