[Hallicrafters] Soild state vs Tubes

In general replacing the rectifiers with solid-state
is a matter of personal preference. However, with
certain units, especially the HT-32 and HT-37 models,
the power transformer is operating at the very "ragged
edge" with tube type rectifiers. Replacing them with
solid-state definitely lowers the "load" on the power
transformer and results in considerably longer life.

On most other equipment I leave the tube type
rectifiers in place.

The whole purpose of restoring a 60 or 70 year old
radio is to experience the glow and warmth of a
thermionic vacuum tube !! If you want to use solid
state replacements then you might as well remove all
of the tubes and insert transistors in all the
sockets(of course with the proper voltage dropping
resistors !) that would defintely reduce ALL heating
and load on the power transformer !!
