[Hallicrafters] Bandwidth on AM

Hi Bob,
If your SX-101A is aligned properly then the bandwidth in the 5 Kcs
position is pretty wide. Since the 101A is set up to receive one AM
sideband at a time, the response is similar to a conventional AM
receiver with a 10 Kcs bandwidth at the 6 db down points and hopefully
there are not many stations in the ham bands taking up a full 10
Kcs-typically you will find AM roundtables at 3880, 85, and 90 without
excessive QRM between the groups. I am a dedicated vintage and AM
operator (many rigs including Desk KW, Viking 500, Valiant, Globe
Champion, Gates BC-250GY etc.) but I don't use an audio chain with
excessive high frequency response. Of all the rigs, only the Gates
would likely be able to produce wide audio and it is currently
undergoing additional restoration and is fed via Orban equalizer and
modulation limiter units to maintain a proper "amateur" bandwidth. If
you want wider bandwidth on the 101A you are looking at either tacking
some capacitors across the low IF transformers or playing with the
values of the switched units.
