I knew I picked this week end to work on antennas for a reason. I fired up
the old rig out in the shop early this evening and all I heard on 40 were
contest exchanges, the logic of which I was trying to figure out. I think
it's the report with the zone, but not sure.

At any rate, the only antenna I have up that is working right now is a
center fed, half wave, sloping dipole with the top end around 90 feet. Even
my AV-640 quit, but it never was right after the Wasps built their nests
(plural) in there. When I took it down the first time it quit working the
matching network was packed with nests and the bottom covered with bee goo.
Apparently there is some truth that an intense RF field can be hazardous to
your health. Or it certainly is when you build your home on a matching
network being fed by a KW. I'm also in the process of replacing the 1 1/2"
EMT in the shop with 2" EMT. I have already reached the 10 pounds in a 5
pound bad stage for the old conduit so I should have used 2" to start. It
would have saved a lot of time and money. Two inch EMT Thin wall conduit is
almost $18 a section now. At this rate it looks like it'll be a couple of
weeks before I can get the old SX101, HT-32 and HT-33B hooked up.

I did make a working climb earlier this week and found the tribander was
held in place by one very loose bolt. I had put it down on the tower top
plate at 100 feet and apparetnly there was enough vibration from the wind to
loosen the nuts. The one still holding was holding by two threads. The
antenna had blocks to prevent it from moving, but had that bolt come out it
could have tipped forward or back and fell which would probably have been a
bit hard on the garage roof as well as the antenna.

As all of the antennas have to come down so I can get at the top ones, I'm
currently building a tram to make it easier to get them down. That and
eliminate the need for two extra ground helpers.

IF I'm lucky I'll be able to do the repair work this week and get them back
up next week end which is probably being a bit overly optimistic.

BTW, any one know where I can find about 5 sections of ROHN 25G?
