All messages, voice and data (whether RTTY or Command/
Control) are now encrypted with electronic equipment. This
started when what's his name - the Navy Warrent Officer/Spy, a book and movie based on him "Family of Spies" revealed what is sold to the former USSR. Also
BELIEVED to be responsible for the capture of the USS
Pueblo by the Chinese. Equipment and policies were almost
immediately changed.
As for routing indicators they are still used (as of 2003). Its broken down to the servicing communications area and unit.
For instant RUHWOZX - RUHW was the the commsta in
Honolulu Hi, OZX (NOZX) was the USS Goldsborough. These callsigns are unclassified and in ACP 113
Q and Z signals are the exact same ones just more of them
as what ham operators use, matter of fact they are out of
the publication (ACP131)
These publications are available on the internet.
I was lucky enough to enjoy the "OLD SCHOOL" ways of
communications in the Navy, Teletypes, R-1051's, URT-23's.
Now it is ALL automated. Almost all the gear is controlled
via remote control from a main computer.
