[Hallicrafters] SX-16 info needed

I have the SX-17, a wonderful receiver. The matching speaker for the 17 and
16 is the R-8T or the R-12T which is an 8" or 12" speaker in a metal
cabinet. Lacking this, any transformer with the correct impedances (primary
and secondary) will work when connected to the speaker terminals properly.

The only dial stringing I am aware of is the short piece of dial cord that
moves the band pointer vertically up and down. This is connected to the
band switch and up to the pointer mechanism.

I'm not sure of the front panel lettering. Mine seems to be a raised brassy
color and might be a part of the front panel but I am not sure. Just use a
mild cleaning solution and wipe gently. Start in one spot only and see how
it comes out.

I did not touch my band spread "Glass". I do not know if you mean the dial
window. I did not need to touch mine. However, if the cover is yellowed, I
did replace one of these windows with a scrap piece of plastic of suitable
thickness. I think I got mine from a greeting card box cover which usually
are made of clear plastic.

Painting is difficult and you can try your idea if the chips are small. I
agree with your approach.

My BFO tube is metal and as far as I know always has been with NO shield
since the tube is metal (I guess). BTW, all the tubes in the IF and RF
lineup including the BFO tube have protective grid caps.

Phasing crystals are out there. Good luck

Front panel screws are slotted brass round heads. The heads are painted
black, same as panel.

I have many good images of my 17 that may help you. One other piece of
advice. If you have not removed the chassis from the cabinet yet, you will
need to do this because when re-aligning the radio, you cannot get to the IF
adjustments with the cabinet in place. It's in the way.

If you want some images, send me an email to k2wh at optonline.net or you can
join my Hallicrafters group at

there.

Subject: [Hallicrafters] SX-16 info needed

Tried to post this earlier but it has not surfaced yet.

Just acquired a reasonably nice SX-16 which has been stored in a very
hospitable home environment for many years, and looking for info on
restoration.

Besides the usual first time power-up precautions including new
electrolytics and variac control, anything specific to this RX I should look
out for or do?

Some issues I can see about which I am not clear thus far are:

What is the usual method of hooking up a non-original speaker. It appears
that I could hook up a standard audio output transformer primary of
sufficient power rating to the 5000 ohm terminals on back.

The dial needs to be restrung. The manual I downloaded from BAMA for the
SX-17 shows no dial cord info. It looks to be rather straightforward. Any
issues here?

The lettering on the front panel, while all intact, is kind of darkened,
whether by age or by sunlight. Is there any particular cleaner preferred or
special care to be taken to avoid further fading when I clean the panel?
What about cleaning the band spread "glass"?

There are some very small chips in the paint of the front panel, mainly
around the outer edge. What kind of paint would make a decent touch-up? I'm
thinking a semi gloss or flat black paint applied with a Q-tip.

The 6J7 BFO tube apparently was originally the glass version, and had a
shield. The current tube in this one is a metal version, and the tube shield
is gone. Is this an issue, or does the metal tube shell provide adequate
shielding?

The phasing crystal is MIA. Does anyone perhaps have one floating around? (A
long shot I know!)

What style screws were used to hold the case onto the front panel, and were
finishing washers used there?

Thanks,

Howie WB2AWQ
