Mike,

Take the antenna off and run the calibrator to see if it isn't some noise pulses
coming from outside the radio.

If it's inside the radio, see if it happens with agc OFF. If not, it may be some
cap in the AGC system shorting out in a periodic way.

Put the radio on a variac and see if the effect is less or goes away on lower
line voltage.  If so, suspect some cap, possibly a bypass cap or silver mica.
