If one side of the power cord on vintage equipment is grounded to the chassis you can still safely add a three prong cord.
On a three prong cord the wide plug blade is connected to the white (neutral) wire. The white wire is grounded at your power panel. So when you install the new three wire cord make sure the white and green wires are connected to chassis ground. The black wire is the "hot" wire and goes the the narrow blade of the plug. If your house is wired to code all will be ok. The additional ground path in some cases will reduce noise and interference from household devices.
