As already mentioned, the *exterior* plywood cut to fit each face of the
tower works well. Three hinges on the inside for two of the joints/corners
and just use hasps for the third side. The plywood can also be cut to fit
between the legs, flush against the face and held in place using J-bolts.
The only drawback to this is the threaded ends stick out. Give it a couple
coats of good exterior paint and you are in business. If he doesn't want
the wood to set right on the ground a couple of "stove bolts" through each
side in the proper location to rest on the cross braces will hold it at what
ever height is desired. Hardware cloth can deter small children, but by the
time they are 7 or 8 it's just a good challenge. That and the painted
plywood looks better.
