Hallicrafters was weird in that their S meters went backward with the meter 
"full scale" right when off. My SX-42, SX-25, S-27 and SX-28A work the same. 
The meter is connected between two tubes, one with AGC and one without. As the 
AGC cuts off the AGC controlled tube, the current through the meter decreases 
and the needle moves to the right. That way a huge signal doesn't peg the 
needle. Of course as a result you have to adjust the meter when there is no sig
nal 
to the left hand position through an inconveniently located pot on the rear of 
the rcvr.
