I wanted to thank everyone for their replies to my questions regarding
the problem with my S-53A if transformer core adjustment slot repair and
alignment questions. Every reply was helpful.
I was able to easily remove the second if transformer shield without
removing the complete unit from the radio. A previous owner must have
done so in order to adjust it. The inside of the unit has an open
plastic frame which holds an upper and lower ferrite core. The core's
have outside threads that allow them to move up and down within the
plastic frame when they are rotated. The upper core adjustment slot
edges were completed gone so any adjustment tool would not engage. It
looks like a thin piece of plastic cemented to the top of the core with
a slot cut into it should work well as the core moves without much
torque applied. I have not yet attempted to remove the shield from the
first if transformer yet, but will have to do that one as well.
