[Hallicrafters] Unusual SX-28 chassis stamp

I recently acquired an SX-28 at a "little country
hamfest" with an ink-stamp marking on the rear chassis
apron that I haven't seen before. In letters about 1
inch tall, it reads "SX-28VR."

Any ideas on the meaning of this? I might assume that
the "R" could be "rack mount." (??) So what's the "V"
for? Anyone else ever seen this?

The radio is late-1942 production, if the serial
number data at www.radioblvd.com is reasonably
accurate. The "V" doesn't refer to a dual-primary
power transformer; this one is 115 volt and is
99.99999% certainly the original. The band spread
tuning is belt driven rather than geared. There are a
few more air padders in the front end, than are found
in my other SX-28 which is estimated to be mid-1941
production.

It was supposed to be a "parts set," full of sawdust
(!!) but otherwise clean and rust free, no cabinet and
missing the S-meter and power supply filter choke; but
everything else is there. I figured for the grand sum
of ten dollars I couldn't go wrong; it followed me
home. And I found a NOS replacement choke in some
stuff from another hamfest 2 years ago, that had been
forgotten; along with an S-meter from an ARR-7 -- not
original but it'll do for now.
